The 9 Outcomes.
What your Score tells you.

Every leader who takes The Score lands in one of nine patterns. Each one names what’s happening, what it’s costing you at work and at home, why it matters now, and the one move to run this week. This is the full set, exactly as a leader sees their own pattern.

Every pattern points to a free play sheet that runs its move: the concept, the steps, and a one-page worksheet. (The two handoff patterns share one sheet, since they’re two halves of the same play.) Take The Score free at mattfoss.com/score.

Outcome 1 of 9

The Drift

You stopped competing. With yourself.

What’s happening

You stopped competing. With yourself. The preparation disappeared first. Then the standards loosened. Not all at once. Slowly enough that you didn’t notice until now.

Costing you at work

If you’re like the leaders I’ve coached through The Drift, you’re down to a handful of hours a week on offense, the proactive work. The rest is reactive, and it feels normal. Every one of them was under 5 hours of offense a week before they saw it.

Costing you at home

The drift doesn’t stay at the office. The same edge that went quiet at work went quiet at home. Present in the room, gone in the eyes.

Why this matters now

The competitor doesn’t come back on its own. Every week you wait, the drift gets harder to reverse.

The move

Block the time tomorrow morning, before email, before meetings, to run pure offense: strategic work that only you can do. Do it for 7 days. That’s your Pregame.

In my experience: run this move consistently and you feel the shift in 30 to 60 days. Give it 90 days of consistency, and it becomes the new pattern in your business.

The Flinch

You know who the conversation is with. You’ve known for months.

What’s happening

You know exactly who the conversation needs to happen with. You’ve known for months. The standard exists. You just haven’t enforced it when it’s uncomfortable.

Costing you at work

If you’re like the leaders I’ve coached through The Flinch, you’ve been sitting on a known performance problem for months. That’s months of the team watching you not act, and recalibrating what’s really tolerated here. Most of them averaged the better part of a year before the conversation finally happened.

Costing you at home

The conversation you’re avoiding follows you home. It’s the weight you carry to dinner and can’t put down, because you haven’t dealt with it.

Why this matters now

The standards you don’t enforce become the standards your team operates to. The gap widens monthly.

The move

Pick one standard that’s being violated. Name the person. Have one conversation this week. Not a confrontation. A conversation about the standard: “Here’s what I expect. Here’s what I’m seeing. Here’s what needs to change.”

In my experience: run this move consistently and you feel the shift in 30 to 60 days. Give it 90 days of consistency, and it becomes the new pattern in your business.

Outcome 3 of 9

Playing Every Position

Your business runs because you run it.

What’s happening

You haven’t built the bench yet. It’s still all you. Every decision, every problem, every customer issue routes through you. You’re the best player on the field, and it’s killing the team.

Costing you at work

If you’re like the owners I’ve coached out of this pattern, you’re working 60-plus hours a week, and most of it is $50-an-hour work in a role worth $500 an hour. Your team can’t grow because you won’t let go. Every one of them believed they were the exception. None of them were.

Costing you at home

When everything routes through you, the work follows you everywhere. The laptop comes home, the phone stays on, and you’re never fully off the clock, even in your own house.

Why this matters now

Every month you stay in every position, your team learns to wait. The trap deepens.

The move

Track your time for one week. Every task, every decision. At the end of the week, circle the FIRST thing someone else could own with training. Hand that one off completely within 14 days.

In my experience: run this move consistently and you feel the shift in 30 to 60 days. Give it 90 days of consistency, and it becomes the new pattern in your business.

Outcome 4 of 9

Won’t Come Off the Field

You hired a team. Then you did their job anyway.

What’s happening

You built the bench. You just won’t take yourself out of the game. You hire people, then do their job anyway on every important play. The team watches from the sideline.

Costing you at work

Your best people are disengaging because they don’t have real ownership. You’re one bad month from burnout, and if you go down, the business goes down with you.

Costing you at home

You never come off the field. Not at 6pm, not on the weekend, not on vacation. There’s no version of you left that isn’t playing.

Why this matters now

Your best players are getting tired of waiting their turn. They’ll leave before you ever put them in.

The move

Transfer one real DECISION this week, not a task. Pick the person who’s ready, hand them the call, and let them own the outcome. Let them make the mistake.

In my experience: run this move consistently and you feel the shift in 30 to 60 days. Give it 90 days of consistency, and it becomes the new pattern in your business.

Outcome 5 of 9

No Game Film

You play game after game and never watch the tape.

What’s happening

You don’t review your own performance. No weekly reflection, no honest assessment of what’s working and what isn’t. You’re playing game after game without ever watching the tape.

Costing you at work

You’re solving the same problem for the third time and calling it new. Without a review habit, improvement is accidental. The leaders I’ve coached out of this were losing the better part of a day a week re-fighting fires they’d already fought, because nobody ever wrote down what the fire taught them.

Costing you at home

You carry the unreviewed week home in your chest. Nothing got named at work, so nothing gets set down at home. You start the weekend already tired from a game you never watched back.

Why this matters now

The same mistake will happen again next month. You won’t recognize it because you never looked.

The move

At the end of this week, sit down for 15 minutes. Ask yourself: What worked? What didn’t? What am I avoiding? Write the answers down. Do it again next week.

In my experience: run this move consistently and you feel the shift in 30 to 60 days. Give it 90 days of consistency, and it becomes the new pattern in your business.

Outcome 6 of 9

No Playbook

Your standards live in your head, not on paper.

What’s happening

Your standards exist in your head, not on paper. When you’re present, things run well. When you’re not, they don’t. The business has your values. It just doesn’t have your systems.

Costing you at work

You’re getting interrupted all day with questions a one-page document could have answered. Your team isn’t incapable. They’re uninstructed, and the instructions live in one place: your head.

Costing you at home

Even on vacation, you’re running the business from a pool chair. Not because your team is weak, but because the instructions live in your head, so the questions find you wherever you are. You’re not off. You’re on call to your own business.

Why this matters now

Every new hire who ramps for six months is the cost of your missing playbook.

The move

Pick the process that breaks most often when you’re not there. Document it in one page: steps, decisions, who owns it. Share it with the person who needs it. That’s your first Process Play.

In my experience: run this move consistently and you feel the shift in 30 to 60 days. Give it 90 days of consistency, and it becomes the new pattern in your business.

Outcome 7 of 9

The Unspoken Standard

You hold a bar your team doesn’t even know exists.

What’s happening

You hold yourself to a bar your team doesn’t even know exists. You outwork everyone, then resent them for not keeping up. But you never said the standard out loud.

Costing you at work

Your team isn’t underperforming. They’re performing to an invisible standard. The frustration you feel is a communication failure, not a talent problem.

Costing you at home

You carry the resentment home and call it exhaustion. A standard nobody’s ever heard is a weight only you carry, and you carry it everywhere.

Why this matters now

The longer you wait to name it, the more your team defines the culture by default.

The move

Write down the top 3 standards you hold but have never stated. Pick one. Share it with your team this week: “This is what I expect. This is what it looks like. This is how we’ll measure it.”

In my experience: run this move consistently and you feel the shift in 30 to 60 days. Give it 90 days of consistency, and it becomes the new pattern in your business.

Outcome 8 of 9

The Held Handoff

You delegated on paper. You never let go in practice.

What’s happening

You put them in the game. You just never stopped calling their plays. The process exists, the person is assigned, but you can’t stop touching it.

Costing you at work

Your team has titles without authority. They know the system but don’t own the outcome. You’ve created the illusion of delegation without the transfer of ownership.

Costing you at home

You handed off the task but kept the worry. So the mental load never leaves. It just rides home with you every night.

Why this matters now

The handoff that didn’t fully happen is still your responsibility. The bottleneck didn’t move.

The move

Pick one system you built that someone else is supposed to own. This week, stop checking it. Stop adjusting it. Let them run it for 30 days. Your only job is a weekly check-in. Not to fix, to coach.

In my experience: run this move consistently and you feel the shift in 30 to 60 days. Give it 90 days of consistency, and it becomes the new pattern in your business.

Outcome 9 of 9

The Halftime Ceiling

Nothing is broken. Nothing is great. You’ve plateaued.

What’s happening

Nothing is broken. Nothing is great. You’ve built something that works: good team, decent numbers, stable business. But you’ve plateaued. The urgency is gone.

Costing you at work

You’re stuck at halftime. Winning enough to be comfortable, not enough to be proud. The gap between where you are and where you could be is widening every quarter.

Costing you at home

The plateau doesn’t clock out. You’re home, everything’s provided for, and you’re quietly restless, chewing on an “is this as good as it gets” you’d never say out loud. Comfortable didn’t make you content. It just made the itch harder to name.

Why this matters now

Comfortable is the most expensive place to stop. Every quarter you run the old plays, you fall further behind the league you’re now in.

The move

Write down the one number that would change everything in your business if it doubled in 12 months. Revenue per employee, close rate, profit margin: one number. Now ask: what’s the ONE thing preventing that? That’s your next play.

In my experience: run this move consistently and you feel the shift in 30 to 60 days. Give it 90 days of consistency, and it becomes the new pattern in your business.
